Longhaired Whisket Dog Breed

The medium-sized long-haired Whippet dog is known for having long silky and soft hair. Its short fur could be mistaken for the Whippet if it is trimmed. It is a breed with a loving, sweet and friendly temperament that makes it suited to families of any age.

Longhaired Whippets are a wonderful companion dog for families with children. These dogs are friendly, easy to handle, and very affectionate towards their families. It is a breed that can live in an apartment, snuggling and cossetting with those it loves.

Origin and History

Walter A. Wheeler Jr., a Whippet breeder who wanted to create a Whippet dog with a long and smooth coat, bred it around 1970. Although he was insistent that only Whippets would be used, many people thought he had crossed it with Shetland Sheepdogs or Borzoi.

There are no major clubs that recognize the Longhaired Whippet, as Whippets who have the shorter coat and not longhaired coats meet the breed standard. Several clubs organize events and activities to help this breed be recognized.

Longhaired Whitppet is child-friendly?

Longhaired whippets get along well with kids of any age. It is a pleasure to play with them, spend time together, or sit by their side. Around them, they are affectionate and playfully. While it is important to supervise them closely, allowing them to interact can be fun.

Trainability

The Longhaired Whippet can be trained easily as the dog is intelligent and loves to please his owner. From a young age, you should establish your leadership and teach them to listen and obey.

Dogs tend to respond well to positive training methods. You can reward them by giving tasty treats or praising loudly. After your dog has completed a particular task, give them a pat on the head.

  • Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is the condition in which your dog’s hip bones are dislocated. This can make it hard for your dog to get from one location to another. The problem is genetic. Check the parents’ health reports before you bring a pup home.
